Thomas Wolfe Letter and Other Materials, 1933-1955

American author Thomas Wolfe was born in Asheville, N.C., and attended the University of North Carolina, 1916-1920. Mildred Hartshorn and her husband Matthew Hartshorn were childhood friends of Wolfe's in Asheville. The collection consists of a letter, 29 August 1933, from Thomas Wolfe to Mildred Hartshorn discussing her husband's death and the death of another mutual friend, a photograph of Thomas Wolfe stepping off of a train with the label on the verso undated postcards depicting Wolfe, clippings and other materials relating to Wolfe's death and funeral, and other items. Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years.
